The Paulownia Tree
A Steady Supply of Renewable Resources--an Important Key to a Sustainable Future.

HORTICULTURE
by Chris Lucas

Ever since the West first made contact with the East, its culture has enriched our lives. From the beauty of exotic silks and ceramics to the delicacy of Oriental cuisine, the essence of Chinahas enhanced our time.

But we've had to wait for the modern science of tissue culture before we could experience oneof the East's greatest treasures in our own gardens.

A Bejeweled Tree
This 20th century wonder is the Sapphire Dragon, an exotic, decorative shade tree which, in spring,is bejeweled with an abundance of dazzling spikes of sapphire-hued flowers: "a dragon breathing fire, not of a ruby glow but of sapphire."

And what makes this jewel from the timeless East such a gem for the hurried West; it takes almost no time to grow.

Quickly Luxuriant
In its first year, a Sapphire Dragon seedling can exceed 10 feet. In its second year, 15 feet. in its third, it can become a substantial shade tree with a final height of 25 feet. And in its second year it really starts to blossom.

A three-year-old Sapphire Dragon can have up to 30 recemes, each of them 3 feet long and one and a half feet wide, bearing300 frilly orchid-like flowers that will perfume a garden with a delicate fragrance. Paradise for birds and gardeners alike.

There's more. The Sapphire Dragon tree is deciduous, dropping its leaves during winter, allowing sunlight and warmth into your home and gardenwhen you need it most. When it refoliates in the warmer months, its enormous, lush and exotic leaves create a luxuriant, cool summer shade.

The Tradition
The Sapphire Dragon is specially bred and select form of Scrophulariaceae Paulownia Kawakami, a native of China.

For centuries the Chinese have grown them for more than just decoration. Their highly prized timber has long been used to make everything from fine furniture to clogs, and even, musical instruments.

In additions to their earthly qualities, these trees have engaged the minds of men who think on a higher plane.

In 1000 A.D., a Buddhist scholar from central China, Chen Chu pondered on the dwindling supply of this precious timber. After careful study, he divined a way that farmers could cultivate the fast growing Paulownia as a high quality timber tree.

The Quest for the Sapphire Dragon
Nearly 1000 years later and thousands of miles away, Australian nurseryman Chris Lucas combined the wisdom of Chen Chu with modern tissue culture technology. The result of this marriage of ancient knowledge and modern science is helping to solve some ofthe pressing environmental problems facing mankind. A range of fast growing Paulownia trees have now been produced that can provide an alternative timber source to Earth's rapidly dwindling rain forests. At the same time, the trees can be used to rehabilitate degradedfarmland and can be harvested in 4, 8, and 10 year cycles.

Paulownia Intercropping
For centuries the Chinese have been growing high quality food crops in combination with Paulownia trees. Because of their deep, straight multiple tap roots, plowing can occur within 18 inches of tall, straight clear high value timber trunks. Their 50% light-to-shadecanopy conserves water by holding in humidity, and creates ideal growing conditions during hot summer months. When nutrient richleaves drop each fall enriching topsoil, the forest farm canopy opens creating ideal growing conditions for full-sun winter crops.

Paulownia Intercropping provides a steady supply of renewable resources, an important key to a sustainable future.

The Dragon Tree Family
Along with the Sapphire Dragon Tree, other superior Paulownia specimens have been selected for their unique properties. Some for their different bloom colors, some for their greater heights, and some for their tolerance of more extreme weather. The JadeDragon, for example, grows 70-80 feet tall and survives temperatures of 10 below 0, offering a warmer rose bloom. The LuckyDragon, with it's beautiful white blossoms, also reaching 70-80 feet, can survive temperatures of 15 above zero. Each are droughttolerant and thrive in temperatures up to 130 degrees F. Therefore, as in their home country of China, there is a tree for every climate zone in the U.S.
